I would like to thank everyone who attended my forum "Gangs, Guns & Schools" Monday evening on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus. About 100 people attended despite unfavorable weather conditions and I am pleased with our conversation, public input and dialogue. Please make sure to read my "Citizen Comments" section in this newsletter to hear what others have to say about the forum. I would also like to thank the panelists who contributed, Craig Byrkit, FBI Special Agent; Dr. Art McCoy, Ferguson-Florissant School District; Mayor Monica Huddleston, City of Greendale; and Lt. Colonel Ken Gregory, St. Louis County Police Department. Here is a video I played at the forum. Click here or on the picture above to watch Sen. Chappelle-Nadal's video. My goal is to stay on top of the problems that face our urban areas regarding gangs, guns and school violence. Senate Bill 124, a measure I have proposed to help prevent the possession, negligent storage, and failure to notify schools of firearm ownership has been referred to the Senate General Laws Committee, however, I am still waiting for a public hearing. This bill deserves to be heard in committee along with public testimony. The bill also deserves a vote by committee members. I am urging the chairman to hear my bill. I will keep you posted on any developments as they become available. I was pleased to welcome all of my guests at my community forum this week.
This week I presented Senate Bill 203 to members of the Senate Seniors, Families and Pensions Committee. The measure would repeal provisions relating to undocumented immigrants. The idea behind the legislation is to correct some provisions of law that was passed in 2008 and to help our immigrant communities live better lives. Also, Senate Bill 199, a measure we highlighted last week in my video section, was officially voted "due pass" by the Senate Seniors, Families and Pensions Committee by a vote of 5-2. The legislation is now ready to be discussed by the full Senate. Click here or on the picture above to watch Sen. Chappelle-Nadal present SB 203. So the officers will have a chance to thank all of their local law abiding citizens for having the correct documentation for any gun/guns they might happen to have on their person. You know, a friendly way for our law enforcement officers to befriend/get to know the people they are protecting is what it boils down to (and less guns on the street and at hand)." – Dan " I attended your forum at UMSL last night and wanted to both thank you for it and introduce myself. I am a new co-leader for the St. Louis chapter of One Million Moms for Gun Control. I am a native New Yorker, but have lived in St. Louis for 20 years. I, like too many others, was only truly awakened to the gun violence crisis in this city and country after all the recent mass shootings. After Sandy Hook, I vowed to get involved. It is clear to me however that the national discussion, as you said last night, is not a discussion that will help the day-to-day violence in St. Louis, and though I feel passionately about the measures being attempted at a federal level, I know that the real work starts at home. This is not a political issue for me but a human issue, first and foremost. We are currently growing our membership and want very much to start bringing our focus to a state and city level. Though assault weapons and high capacity magazines are not the primary concern in much of our city, straw purchasing, illegal trafficking and such, most certainly are. I know how complex all these issues are and that there is not one solution to the violence crisis. I wanted to reach out to you to let you know we are here, and that we would like to be a part of the local dialogue and lend our hand where we can. You can find our local chapter on Facebook: One million moms for gun control-MO/St. Louis chapter. Thank you for all your hard work and time." – Melissa "Thank you so much for including me on the panel last night. I think those in attendance gained some good insight and new information on this problem all of our communities are facing. The conversation was good and thoughtful, and the passion you obviously have for resolutions to this big issue came through loud and clear, which we all appreciate as well. "Enjoyed tonight's program at UM-St Louis. Very informative. Thanks for all that you are doing to help improve the quality of life in our region." – John "Thank you for an informative program. I am in agreement that cities have a hand gun problem more serious than just assault weapons. This from a former hunter and U.S. Army officer (Vietnam)." – Ken "Thank you for your hard work in protecting Missouri workers in negotiating an agreement on SB 1. I truly appreciate your efforts." – Brett "Senator: Thank you for standing up for the workers of Missouri. I was in the gallery watching you last week and heard about your fine work this week. You are a true friend of working people and the folks who represent them when they are injured." – Kenneth "Hello Senator, enjoyed the meeting. It was informative. Continue helping those who want to be helped and pray for those who refuse. A concerned citizen." – Loretta Friday, Feb. 15 – Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 It was quite an eventful weekend, Friday morning I attended a breakfast hosted by Epworth Children and Family Services. Several area legislators were in attendance. Later that day, I was pleased to tour the St. Louis Anheuser-Busch Brewery for a meeting of the St. Louis Regional Caucus. Then, I attended a tour of a new proposed facility that would bring some new jobs to the St. Louis region, a global data storage center that is in the works. Sen. Chappelle-Nadal and Rep. Vicki Englund, D-St. Louis Friday night, I continued my ride-alongs with law enforcement in the St. Louis region. This weekend I was accompanied by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, and the St. Louis Metro Police Department. Again, the experience was eye-opening and we were able to tell our story with our colleagues in the Senate this week during floor debate. Saturday afternoon, I continued my efforts by riding along with officers from the Berkeley Police Department. Later that evening, I attended a Chinese New Year Celebration at Missouri Baptist University hosted by the St. Louis Chinese American News. Sunday, I joined the University City Police Department for a ride-along. I hope to continue this process in an effort to make our streets safe again. On Monday, I celebrated President's Day by meeting with several area news organizations to discuss my "Gangs, Guns & Schools" forum and the tough issues that our communities are facing. I was pleased to meet with several Patch publications, The St. Louis Beacon, The Riverfront Times and The St. Louis American. Also, I was able to be a guest on the UMSL Student Radio Program broadcasted from campus. Later that evening we held the forum, then it was back to Jefferson City for session. |
