JEFFERSON CITY — Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D-University City, wants to clarify certain incorrect assumptions put forth by the media relating to Ferguson-Florissant Superintendent Dr. Art McCoy, who was recently put on paid administrative leave.
“As a state senator who represents the Ferguson-Florissant school district, current director on the University City School Board and member of the Senate Education Committee, I would like to comment on some of the incorrect information being released by the news media regarding the current employment status of Superintendent Dr. Art McCoy.
Neither the State Board of Education, nor the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education are currently, or have ever investigated Superintendent Dr. Art McCoy. That is not a practice adopted by DESE or the state board in these situations.
On a routine basis, school districts make corrections to attendance records to DESE for multiple reasons. The process is called self-reporting and regularly occurs every year across the state of Missouri for school districts that find themselves in a similar situation. DESE simply makes the corrections the school district reported, adjusts the figures and anything else associated with the changes.
I am urging the media to adopt a full understanding of a concept before unintentionally making a skewed report to the public. Thank you.”
