Legislative Column for the Week of May 20, 2013
Thanking Our Veterans this Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day Weekend, we pay tribute to our Missouri veterans. These courageous men and women serve our country, keep us safe, and defend our borders. They sacrifice time away from their families to protect our families. It’s only fitting to take a look at the bills we sent to the governor this legislative session to support their sacrifice and service.

We sent two bills to the governor’s desk created to make life easier for veterans when they return home.  Senate Bill 106 allows veterans to use training in certain military courses as credit toward seeking degrees in post-secondary educational institutions. Continuing education is an important benefit we can offer our veterans.

Senate Bill 110 deals with child custody and visitation rights of deployed parents. The bill would prevent custody or visitation changes to their court orders no sooner than 90 days after their deployment ends. This gives sufficient time to seek legal counsel in child custody proceedings.

Prior to this session’s passage of Senate Bill 186, funeral homes were unable to release information about a deceased military member to anyone other than family members due to privacy concerns.  That left a number cremated remains of veterans left behind in funeral homes with no one able to claim the remains and arrange for a proper resting place.  This bill would authorize funeral homes to release information to the Department of Veterans Affairs so the remains of these honored military men and women can be properly cared for in a timely manner.

The bills are awaiting the governor’s signature.

We worked hard this session in the Missouri General Assembly to affirm the rights of our veterans. Because May is Military Appreciation Month, be sure to thank a veteran this Memorial Day. They deserve our thanks and appreciation.

I always appreciate hearing from you. If you have any questions about the topics discussed above, or any other issues, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
