Legislative Highlights from the Missouri Senate
Week of Jan. 14, 2013

Last week, Senate Bill 12, pertaining to immunity from civil liability for court appointed attorneys, was sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senate Bill 13, pertaining to solid waste management, was sent to the Senate Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment Committee.

Senator Schaefer attended the Columbia Chamber of Commerce reception on Thursday, Jan. 10. Kurt Schaefer, and Jim Owen (president and CEO of Missouri Employers Mutual).

Monday (1/14) was the Grand March and Inaugural Ball at the Capitol. I appreciated and enjoyed meeting with everyone who stopped by my office.

On Tuesday (1-15), I met with a large group from the Columbia Board of Realtors. They were interested in upcoming legislation for introduction this year and how it could possibly affect the city of Columbia.

On Wednesday (1-16), I co-sponsored Senate Bill 159 with Sen. Eric Schmitt. This bill prohibits health carriers from imposing greater co-payments, co-insurance, or office visit deductibles to insurers for covered services provided by a licensed physical therapist than those charged for the same covered services provided by licensed primary care physicians.

On Thursday (1-17), I sponsored legislation (SJR 14) to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Senate Joint Resolution 14, if approved by voters, would strengthen our constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

Clarksville Eagle Days

Did you know Missouri has one of the largest populations of wintering bald eagles in the lower 48 states?  A great location for spotting bald eagles is below Lock and Dam No. 24 in Clarksville, located south of Louisiana on Highway 79. Call Karen Armstrong at (660) 785-2420 for more information. Activities this year include:

  • A live eagle program every hour on the hour;
  • The MDC video  “Where Eagles Soar”;
  • Hands-on exhibits, displays and kid activities at the River Front Park;
  • Spotting scopes set up for you to view eagles with the help of Department of Conservation staff and volunteers; and
  • A bonfire maintained by the Corps of Engineers to keep the chill off as you watch the eagles feeding on fish in the open waters.

Thank you for your interest in the issues that affect the citizens of Boone and Cooper counties.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout this session or plan on coming by the office, please contact my office at (573) 751-3931.
