Legislative Highlights from the Missouri Senate
Week of March 4, 2013

Last Thursday (2-28), I had the pleasure of announcing Dr. Frank Rieger and his wife as the Physician of the Day on the Senate floor. Dr. Rieger is retired from the University of Missouri and is now associated with the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. Dr. Rieger’s specialty is Ophthalmology.  

On Monday (3-4), Senate Joint Resolution 14 was voted out of the General Laws Committee and now waits placement on the Senate Calendar for debate.

On Tuesday (3-5), Senate Bill 193 and Senate Bill 73 were perfected on the Senate floor.  On Thursday (3-7), SB 193 and SB 73 were third read and finally passed by the Senate. They now go to the House of Representatives for possible approval.

Also on Tuesday, Senate Bill 72, which designates the month of May as “Motorcycle Awareness Month,” was voted out of General Laws Committee and awaits placement on the Senate calendar for debate.

On Wednesday morning (3-6), Senate Bill 130, which increases the penalties and driver license suspension periods for those who fail to yield the right-of-way in certain instances, was heard in the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

I was pleased to introduce Dr. Kristin Sohl and 25 students to the Senate on Wednesday (3-6). Dr. Sohl is with the University of Missouri. She was here with the CARE (Community Advocacy through Resident Education) program for their legislative day.

Four Truman University School of Public Affairs students visited the Missouri Senate this week. I was honored to introduce Youngil Kim, Bo Sun Choi, Iris Chun, and Jae Jang on the Senate floor. Dr. Mary Stegmaier and Emily Johnson of Truman University also accompanied them.

On Thursday (3-7), Senate Bill 226, which would modify the standards for determining when a person is in need of mental health detention and evaluation, was heard in the Veterans’ Affairs and Health Committee.

 

 

 

 

Did you know…

Senator Michael Kinney was the oldest lawmaker to serve in the Missouri Senate. Elected in 1912 and retiring in 1968 at the age of 93, Sen. Kinney also served the longest time in the Missouri Senate.
