Sen. Walsh Urges Drivers to Share the Road in Observation of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

JEFFERSON CITY—State Sen. Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, encourages drivers to watch out for motorcyclists as part of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, held nationwide every May. The campaign educates the public about safe driving practices for both motorists and motorcyclists to reduce the incidence of motorcycle-related accidents. According to the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, more than 270 motorcyclists in the state were killed from 2010 to 2012.

“As the weather heats up, more and more motorcyclists are going to hit the road. It’s important that drivers be aware of motorcycles and drive accordingly,” said Sen. Walsh. “At the same time, motorcyclists have a responsibility to drive safely and make sure they’re visible to other vehicles.”

Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable on the road, as many drivers can’t see them until the last second. Motorists need to be extra aware when driving near motorcycles. In turn, motorcyclists are urged to anticipate the moves of fellow drivers, make themselves visible to other vehicles and drive cautiously in adverse road conditions.

The National Safety Council recommends the following tips for drivers and motorcyclists:

For Motorists

  • Allow greater following distance behind a motorcycle.
  • Be extra cautious in intersections. Most crashes occur when a motorist fails to see a motorcyclist and turns left in front of a motorcycle.
  • Give a motorcycle the full lane width – never try to share a lane.

For Motorcyclists

  • Avoid riding in poor weather conditions.
  • Position motorcycle in lane where you will be out of a motorist’s blind spot.
  • Use turn signals for every turn or lane change.
