Voters in Kansas City will be asked to consider five amendments to the Missouri Constitution as well as two local questions on the Aug. 5, 2014, primary ballot. As the state senator who represents a portion of Jackson County, I would like to explain the ballot issues you will see when heading to the polls on Aug. 5. As the ranking minority party leader serving on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I was proud of the work my colleagues and I were able to deliver on behalf of our state's much-needed programs and departments. We spent countless hours deliberating on how to increase spending for our K-12 and higher education institutions, provide additional funding to strengthen Missouri's mental health system, allocate money to construct the dilapidated Fulton State Hospital, and fund restoration of dental benefits for Medicaid-eligible adults currently not receiving these services. This session I supported legislation that tackles the "Border War" between Missouri and Kansas, addressing how businesses relocate from one state to another to benefit from certain tax incentives. Senate Bill 635, signed by the governor in early July, prohibits the issuance of incentives under the BUILD program, the new or expended business facilities program, the Urban Enterprise Loan program, or the Missouri Works program for businesses that relocate from certain counties in Kansas (Douglas, Johnson, Miami, or Wyandotte) to certain counties in Missouri (Cass, Clay, Jackson or Platte). <<more |

Domestic Violence Victims Receive Help from On-Site Health Clinic
The Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City recently opened an on-site health clinic to help those who are victims of domestic violence. Often, these individuals suffer from injuries that can have a devastating effect on their long-term health. SafeCARE is the first health care clinic located inside a domestic violence center in the Kansas City area. <<more
