Understanding the Ballot Issues: Primary Election for Kansas City


Voters in Kansas City will be asked to consider five amendments to the Missouri Constitution as well as two local questions on the Aug. 5, 2014, primary ballot. As the state senator who represents a portion of Jackson County, I would like to explain the ballot issues you will see when heading to the polls on Aug. 5. I am not encouraging you to vote for or against any proposal, but I do strongly encourage you to cast your ballot. The only way to make your voice heard is to exercise your right to vote. <<more


Governor Severely Slashes FY 2015 Budget

As the ranking minority party leader serving on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I was proud of the work my colleagues and I were able to deliver on behalf of our state's much-needed programs and departments. We spent countless hours deliberating on how to increase spending for our K-12 and higher education institutions, provide additional funding to strengthen Missouri's mental health system, allocate money to construct the dilapidated Fulton State Hospital, and fund restoration of dental benefits for Medicaid-eligible adults currently not receiving these services. Calling a Truce over the Missouri-Kansas
Border War


This session I supported legislation that tackles the "Border War" between Missouri and Kansas, addressing how businesses relocate from one state to another to benefit from certain tax incentives. Senate Bill 635, signed by the governor in early July, prohibits the issuance of incentives under the BUILD program, the new or expended business facilities program, the Urban Enterprise Loan program, or the Missouri Works program for businesses that relocate from certain counties in Kansas (Douglas, Johnson, Miami, or Wyandotte) to certain counties in Missouri (Cass, Clay, Jackson or Platte). <<more

Grant Program Supporting Environmental Projects In Our Communities

The Energizing Our Environment Micro-Grant Program, sponsored by KCP&L, provides grants ranging from $500-$3,000 to help support environmental projects throughout communities in the Kansas City area. Nonprofit organizations looking to support and promote sustainable projects for our environment should go online and fill out an application. <<more

Domestic Violence Victims Receive Help from On-Site Health Clinic
The Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City recently opened an on-site health clinic to help those who are victims of domestic violence. Often, these individuals suffer from injuries that can have a devastating effect on their long-term health. SafeCARE is the first health care clinic located inside a domestic violence center in the Kansas City area. <<more


New Home for the Vision Research Center, the Eye Foundation and the Department of Ophthalmology
In late June, officials gathered for the groundbreaking of the new Hospital Hill Outpatient Center at Truman Medical Centers. With this new center, Kansas City residents will have access to much-needed medical services that will benefit each citizen's overall health.<<more
