Energy Assistance Programs Available During Winter for Low-Income Missourians

For many families throughout Missouri, times are still tight. Countless citizens struggle every day to provide for themselves and their children, to put food on the table and keep a roof over their family’s heads. One of the most costly expenditures is for utilities, especially during fall and winter. Rates continue to go up, while wages have generally remained stagnant. It puts a significant burden on lower-income families. No one should have to choose between feeding their children and having heat in their home.

Luckily, Missouri offers a number of assistance programs to low-income residents. One of the most beneficial this time of the year is the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, which is offered through the Missouri Department of Social Services. The program helps qualified applicants in paying heating bills through March. The assistance available depends on the household size, income and the type of fuel used for heating. These payments are usually made directly to the utility company.

The Department of Social Services is now accepting applications for LIHEAP, which can be found by clicking here or visiting www.dss.mo.gov/fsd/liheap.htm. An individual is eligible if they are a U.S. citizen or have legal residence, are responsible for paying for home heating costs, have an income at or below 135 percent of the poverty level, which is $26,716 annually for a family of three) and have less than $3,000 in bank accounts, retirement accounts or investments.

Those who qualify for LIHEAP may also be eligible to receive additional assistance through the Energy Crisis Intervention Program. This program makes payments to energy providers for households who have had their service terminated or are faced with disconnection. The program also provides help for those who use purchased fuel, such as propane. More information this program can also be found at the www.dss.mo.gov.
