Jefferson City - Missouri senators are speaking out today against the governor’s vetoes of several bills meant to spur job creation and economic growth. Today (6-11), the governor vetoed House Bills 1296, 1455 and 1865 and Senate Bills 584, 612, 662, 693, 727 , 829 and 860. Senate Leader Tom Dempsey, R-St. Charles, said the governor’s concerns over these bills were disputable and once again called into question the seemingly distant governor’s political agenda.
“Look at the votes on these bills, most of them passed the Legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support,” said Dempsey. “We have done our due diligence as legislators to protect Missouri tax payers and provide the tools necessary to attract jobs to the state.”
Senate Appropriations Chairman Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, said the governor continues making excuses against tax incentives for hard-working Missourians.
“The governor will come up with anything to argue against tax breaks for the middle class,” said Schaefer. “He has proven over and over again that he supports a bigger government and higher taxes. The governor’s belief that the people’s money is government’s money is profoundly wrong.”
Senate Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sen. Will Kraus, R-Lee’s Summit, says he will work with colleagues to review the governor’s flawed vetoes.
“The governor and his bureaucrats at the Department of Revenue are putting a heavy foot on the necks of Missouri’s small businesses and risking their future,” said Kraus. “Once again, the governor supports his Department of Revenue bureaucrats and their flawed policies rather than our job creators and hard-working families. It’s a shame.”
The General Assembly will convene for the annual veto session on Sept. 10, 2014. At that time, the Legislature can attempt to override the governor’s vetoes. To learn more about these bills and other bills or to track their progress, visit www.senate.mo.gov.
