Missouri School Board Rushing Towards Replacing Education Commissioner in Closed Process

JEFFERSON CITY— Senator Paul LeVota, D-Independence, issued the following statements today regarding recent concerns of the State Board of Education’s process of replacing retiring Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro:

“The education commissioner holds a vast amount of power and influence over the public education of Missouri’s children, which is why the State Board of Education’s intention to use a rushed and closed process for their selection raises concerns. It is imperative that this process remains methodical, inclusive and transparently reviewed in order to consider a broader range of candidates, and ensure that the most qualified applicant is chosen. I encourage the board to approach this decision open to comments and discussions. It is essential that educators, students and parents receive a voice in the future of their educational successes and the leadership involved. We need a commissioner that understands the ever-changing world of education, and will work hand-in-hand with the Legislature to ensure Missouri students succeed. By opening and slowing down the process, the outcome will encourage support and a better understanding for educational policies in our state’s future.”
