Senator Jamilah Nasheed Fights
to Advance Minimum Wage Legislation

JEFFERSON CITY — Today (3-11), one month after Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, presented Senate Bill 531 before the Senate Committee on Small Business, Insurance and Industry, the legislation was voted out of that committee with a vote of 4-3. When taken up on the Senate floor and passed, the bill would, after approval from Missouri voters, raise the state’s minimum wage from $7.50 to $10.00 per hour.

As an outspoken defender of disenfranchised communities and hard-working Missourians, Sen. Nasheed expressed her pride in the spirit of cooperation shown by her colleagues.  Senator Nasheed stated that she was very pleased with the bill’s success in committee as well as the genuine concern shown by Missouri lawmakers toward the plight of workers. “This committee has shown bipartisanship today, in doing a truly great service for our Missouri workforce,” she later said.

Senator Nasheed continued, “We are one step closer to having a full dialog about minimum wage on the Senate floor.  Today was a step in the right direction.”
