Senator Scott Sifton's Bill Increasing Cap on Food Pantry Tax Credit Receives Committee Hearing

JEFFERSON CITY — In response to the growing need for food pantry donations throughout the state, yesterday the Senate Jobs, Economic Development and Local Government Committee heard legislation from Sen. Scott Sifton, D-Affton, to raise the current cap on the Food Pantry Tax Credit from $1.25 million to $2 million.  Missourians who make donations to food pantries may receive a credit of up to $2,500 per taxpayer per year.  Senator Sifton’s legislation, Senate Bill 647, would allow individuals and corporations to utilize the tax credit cap increase starting next year.

“Congress cut $5 billion from the federal food stamp program just before the holidays.   We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the need for well-stocked food pantries throughout  Missouri,” said Sen. Sifton.  “Now, an additional $9 billion may be eliminated from this food stamp program in the federal farm bill.  Our food pantries will need individuals and organizations to donate more food.”

Several groups, including the Missouri Food Bank Association, testified in support of  Sifton’s bill.  Missouri Association for Social Welfare’s Glenn Koenen stated an increased demand for donations because food pantries are readily available whereas food stamp approval can take up to 45 days.

“I look forward to seeing this important bill advance out of committee and move to the full Senate for debate. We need to bring to light to how many Missourians rely on food pantries and the donations these important facilities take in,” said Sen. Sifton.  “As Congress continues to negotiate the farm bill, we need to consider how cuts to food stamps will affect thousands of families across our state.”
