Legislative Column for Oct. 5, 2015

Art Exhibit Brightens Capitol

During our legislative session, days are filled working to craft and pass legislation that has a positive impact on not only constituents of the 33rd District, but on communities across the state.  Not all legislation is met with open arms throughout the Legislature.  We encounter strong opposition, acceptance only if a bill can be amended with another’s ideas or concerns, etc.  There is, however, a bright spot in every day: student artwork on display.  As I walk from the parking garage and through the Capitol, artwork from every district is proudly displayed. A smile crosses my face as I see students’ artwork from the 33rd District. I thoroughly enjoy seeing the creative and talented work from so many students who clearly have a passion for the arts.  We are treated with artwork from children in Kindergarten through High School, an opportunity unlike any other and I am so thankful that our schools are willing to participate in this program.

The arts play a vital role in communities and because of this I encourage teachers and students to join together and enter the 2016 Senate Art Exhibit. The Missouri Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) and the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA) are sponsoring another year of artwork here in this great building.

Teachers may digitally submit artwork from students in grades K-12, now through November 22. In January 2016, senators will be asked to view submissions from their districts and select winners for display. The winning entries will be displayed throughout 2016.

As always, I appreciate it when groups from around Missouri and from our community back home come to visit me at the Capitol. If you would like to arrange a time to come and visit me in Jefferson City, or if you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact my Capitol office at (573) 751-1882.
