Legislative Column for the Week of Jan. 5, 2015
Session Begins
On Wednesday, Jan. 7th, at noon, I was proud to be sworn in as senator for the 24th Senatorial District. I have been fortunate to represent Creve Coeur and the surrounding areas of St. Louis County for the past six years in the Missouri House of Representatives.  Now, it is an honor to be representing new constituents and new areas of St. Louis County in the Senate. From Overland to Chesterfield, St. Ann to Ballwin, I am ready and excited to get to work and fight for the priorities of my constituents, our district and our state.

Amidst all the ceremonies and festivities of the first week of the legislative session, my staff and I have been working hard on legislation that puts the interests of the people first, defends the middle class and stands up to special interests. I have already filed three pieces of legislation to achieve these goals by championing ethics reform and expanding healthcare access for Missourians.

Senate Bill 123 and Senate Bill 124 address the terrible state of Missouri’s ethics laws. Senate Bill 123 would reinstate sensible campaign contribution limits to stem the flow of unlimited donations that erodes the public’s trust in government. Senate Bill 124 would ensure that big money for campaigns can no longer be funneled through shell entities in order to hide the identity of contributors by requiring non-profit organizations to disclose their donors.

Senate Bill 125 would provide access to healthcare for approximately 300,000 Missourians by expanding the Medicaid program. This healthcare reform is estimated to bring tens of thousands of jobs to Missouri, boosting economic development in the St. Louis region. Initially, this expansion is entirely funded by the federal government, with Missouri having to fund a maximum of 10 percent of the costs by 2020. A majority of states have now expanded Medicaid; it’s time to bring our federal dollars home to help low-income people in our communities access healthcare.

Over the next month, I will be filing more legislation that promotes the interests of the people in the 24th District. From fighting to increase education funding, to working to prevent teen suicide, to helping allow seniors to age in their homes, I will share my ideas and actions with you and hope you’ll let me know your thoughts and comments. My contact details are below, along with my new office location. If you’re in Jefferson City, please stop by to visit, or get in touch by phone or email if you’d like to share an opinion or an idea for legislation.

I am excited and proud to have an incredible team serving our community along with me.  Here is our Senate office staff:
