JEFFERSON CITY — Senator Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, is encouraging District 13 residents to search Missouri’s largest lost and found: the state treasurer’s unclaimed property database. According to the treasurer’s office, a review of the unclaimed property database has revealed there are nearly 5 million account holders in Missouri who have more than $874 million in unclaimed property.
“Many of our citizens don’t realize this resource exists — in the 13th District, alone, there are close to 148,636 individuals, businesses and local governments with about $24 million in unclaimed property currently being held,” said Sen. Walsh.
Banks, businesses and insurance companies turn over unclaimed property to the treasurer’s office after accounts have been inactive, and the owners couldn’t be contacted, for a statutorily defined period of time based on the type of property, which is generally five years. Unclaimed property is held in perpetuity until the owner, or a proper heir, is located and claims it.
“Considering one in 10 Missourians has unclaimed property, with the average claim being $300, there’s a good chance you will find your name, or the name of someone you know, with just the click of a button. I encourage everyone to take a minute and do a quick search for your name.” Sen. Walsh said.
Account owners can file a claim online or request a paper claim be mailed to them at any time. By law, specific dollar amounts that exceed $50 are not public record. To file a claim or check to see if you have unclaimed property, visit www.ShowMeMoney.com, or write to: PO Box 1004, Jefferson City, Mo 65102.
