JEFFERSON CITY— Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, D-University City, released the following statement today (8-25) regarding raising the minimum wage in St. Louis.
“I want to commend the members of the City of St. Louis Board of Aldermen on their consideration of raising the minimum wage. Unlike their counterparts in the county, the city has taken a stand to have a courageous conversation.
A higher minimum wage makes the region more competitive. It makes the city more attractive to working families and helps put more money in their pockets. That money is likely to flow right back to the very employers fighting this bill.
Paying poverty wages and keeping families on public assistance is economic violence. Black Lives Matter has called for more economic security in our communities. Raising the minimum wage is a step towards better economic security for the very people who often feel violated by our education and economic systems.”
