JEFFERSON CITY - As the legislative session comes close to the end, many
school, tour and leadership groups from around Missouri have made their way to Jefferson
City to see the Capitol and their government in action. Over the past few weeks, many
citizens from the district have stopped by the office for a visit amidst their various activities.
This past week I had the pleasure of visiting with two local leadership groups, Leadership
Joplin 2000 and Leadership Neosho 2000, sponsored by their chambers of commerce.
Since the session began in January, I have met many students from Neosho High School,
Westview Elementary, Benton Elementary, Triway and Granby Elementary, and students
from Crowder College and Missouri Southern State College. Other smaller groups of
people from the district have stopped by to visit briefly, or to talk about specific issues. I
greatly appreciate visits from those I represent, as it allows me the opportunity to get direct
feedback from the people, to put faces to names, and to better exemplify the values of the
district.
I would like to invite and encourage everyone to come and visit Jefferson City and
see our government in action. Our government is for the people, and the Capitol Building
is no exception. My office is always open to discuss legislative issues, local happenings,
or just a place to hang your hat. I would be more than happy to assist anyone wishing to
make arrangements to tour the Capitol and other related sites.
As the legislative session ends in two weeks, we will not return until September for
veto session, and will then reconvene January 2001. Anyone interested in visiting
Jefferson City is encouraged to make reservations at their earliest opportunity, whether
part of a large group or just individuals.
Jefferson City has much to offer for tour sites in addition to the Capitol. Such places or
tours worth checking into include the Missouri State Supreme Court Building, Jefferson
Landing Historic Site, the Governor's Mansion, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Museum,
Runge Conservation Center, and the Hillside tour of the prison.
As a practicing physician, I continue to work three days a week in my office in Joplin, specializing in ear, nose and throat problems and related allergies. In the mid-week, I serve as a citizen legislator at the state capitol.
If you have any comments or questions, Sen. Singleton can be reached at his office in Jefferson City -- State Capitol, Room 426, Jefferson City, Missouri 65101, (573) 751-2306, msinglet@services.state.mo.us. - end -
