7th DISTRICT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY SPENDS DAY IN THE STATE CAPITOL WITH SEN. JOHN LOUDON

JEFFERSON CITY -- On Monday, more than 130 students had the opportunity to watch state government in action. Members of the 7th District Leadership Academy spent the day with Sen. John Loudon, R-West St. Louis County, and Rep. Neal St. Onge, R-Ballwin, and were able to tour the State Capitol and watch both the State Senate and the House of Representatives in session.

"I think it's important for these young people connect with their government and what happens in the Capitol," said Sen. Loudon. "I hope they learned politics and civic involvement are not just birth rights, but duties also."

Sen. Loudon took over this program in 1995 from his predecessor in the House of Representatives, in order to encourage an interest in government and political participation in more young people.

The leadership academy is one of only a handful of similar organizations in the United States, and is the only one-of-its-kind in Missouri.

"They say that good habits formed early, last a lifetime," Sen. Loudon said. "I hope these young people develop t he same level of understanding and interest in government with which I was raised."

Leadership academy members are selected by their schools and meet once a month. In addition to the Jefferson City trip, activities include a visit to the St. Louis County Courthouse for a mock trial, a tour of the World Bird Sanctuary and an inside view of the St. Louis Election Board.

"This group gives students an inside look into and helps them to see their role in their community," said Sen. Loudon. "After all, it's young people who have the most to gain or lose by the actions of government."
