Until 2000, Sarah Steelman was an investment broker in Rolla. She is active in a number of volunteer groups in
Rolla including CORE(Champions of Rolla Education), member of the Chamber of Commerce,
and the St. Patrick's School and Home Association. She is a member of the First Christian
Church of Rolla.
Steelman serves on the Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan Board of Trustees; the Missouri
Public Service Commission's Gas Cost Recovery Task Force; the Joint Committee on Terrorism, Bioterrorism &
Homeland Security; and the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules. She is chairman of the Senate Committee
on Commerce and Environment; a member of the Senate Committee on Aging, Families, Mental & Public Health;
a member of the Senate Committee on Education; and a member of the Senate Committee on Governmental Accountability
and Fiscal Oversight.
Steelman received her B.A. in History and M.A. in Economics from the University of Missouri
in Columbia. She has served as an adjunct economics professor at Lincoln University. After
graduating from UMC, Sarah Steelman served as an economist for the Department of Revenue. She wrote many articles and papers related to Missouri fiscal issues.
After moving to Rolla, she served as the Deputy Director of the Missouri Department of Natural
Resources - Division of Geology and Land Survey from 1988 to 1993.
After leaving state government, she served as Executive Director of the Big Brothers and Big
Sisters Program in Rolla. This not-for-profit organization, funded through donations from
individuals in the community, matches kids in need of attention with volunteer mentors.
