Sen. Childers was born November 25, 1944, in Ironton. He was educated at Arcadia Valley High School and College of the Ozarks (A.S., B.S.), with graduate work at Southwest Missouri State University.
He is a teacher, farmer and businessman. He also served four and one-half years in the U.S. Peace Corps, Central America.
His district consists of seven counties along the Missouri-Arkansas line and includes Barry, Christian, Douglas, Howell, Ozark, Stone and Taney Counties.
He is a member of the Baptist Church and Lions Club. He served in the House of Representatives from 1982 to 1996.
