Jason Glennon Crowell was born on February 3, 1972, in Cape Girardeau where he continues to reside. He graduated from Cape Central High School in 1990 before earning his B.S.B.A. in economics from Southeast Missouri State University in 1995. Crowell earned his juris doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1998.
In November of 2000, Crowell was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives by the people of Cape Girardeau County living in the 158th House District. During his first term in the statehouse, Crowell secured an additional $250,000 in annual funding for the Network Against Sexual Violence, served as Republican Deputy Whip and was the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee. He also served on the Education Appropriations Committee, the Banks and Financial Institutions Committee, the Civil and Administrative Law Committee, the Ethics Committee and the Legislative Research Committee during the 91st General Assembly. Crowell's first-term duties also included membership on the Interim Committee on Nursing Home Caregiving and the Interim Committee on Education-Capital Improvements and Maintenance.
On winning re-election to the House in 2002, Crowell was elected to serve the chamber as majority floor leader, a legislative leadership position responsible for setting the agenda and bill order for floor debate. In addition to his duties as majority floor leader, Crowell chaired the Ethics Committee, the Rules Committee and the Subcommittee on Legislative Research Personnel. Crowell also served on the Joint Committee on Legislative Research during the 92nd General Assembly.
When the governor in early 2004 proposed closing the Cottonwood Children's Center in Cape Girardeau, then-Representative Crowell immediately began working with southeast Missouri community members and legislators in the House and Senate to ensure that funding was secured so that area residents continued to receive necessary treatment and services.
Crowell was elected to serve Southeast Missouri's 27th Senate District in November of 2004 and was appointed chairman of the Senate's Pensions, Veterans' Affairs and General Laws Committee at the start of the 93rd General Assembly - the only incoming senator in his class to earn a committee chairmanship. Senator Crowell also serves as vice-chair of the Financial, Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee and is a member of the Gubernatorial Appointments Committee, the Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee and the Economic Development, Tourism and Local Government Committees.
Senator Crowell has received numerous awards of appreciation for his dedication and service, including the Missouri Farm Bureau Friend of Agriculture Award, 2003 and 2004; Missouri Bar's Legislative Award, 2002 and 2003; St. Louis Business Journal Award, 2003; Missouri Association of Counties Legislative Award, 2004; Missouri Association for Career and Technical Education Legislative Recognition Award; and Missouri Supreme Court Legislative Award.
Senator Crowell's community involvement includes serving on the board of directors of the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence and on the University of Missouri Delta Center Advisory Board. He is a member of the Cape Girardeau Noon Lions Club, Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, Southeast Missouri State University Copper Dome Society and Booster Club and the Missouri and Cape Girardeau Farm Bureau. Senator Crowell is also an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
Along with his service in the legislature, Senator Crowell is an attorney with the Cape Girardeau firm of Osburn, Hine, Kuntze, Yates and Murphy, LLC and is licensed to practice law in Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois.
