Senator Norma Champion of Springfield was elected to the Missouri Senate in 2002 following ten years of service as a member of the Missouri House of Representatives. Prior to her involvement at the state level, Senator Champion was a member of the Springfield City Council for five years and for nearly 30 years she provided a positive influence for thousands of young Ozark residents through her role as Aunt Norma on the Children's Hour on KY-3 television.

Having earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma, Senator Champion also serves on the faculty of Evangel University where she teaches in the fields of communications and political science.

As a state senator, she currently chairs the committee which oversees all legislation relating to senior citizens, families, health and mental health. She also co-chairs the Education Committee which addresses matters relating to elementary, secondary and higher education in Missouri. Her committee assignments include the powerful Appropriations Committee which decides how state funds are spent, the Committee on Ways and Means which filters all proposed tax bills and is chair of the Interim Committee on Adoption Promotion and Child Support Enforcement.

In addition to her legislative duties, she is a current member or has served on the following organizations: Women in Government; lifetime member of the Missouri PTA; Boys and Girls Town of Missouri, board; Junior League, advisory board; Parents as Teachers, advisory board; Global University, board of directors; Missouri Film Commission, member; Division of Medical Services Medical and Technical Advisory Committee, member; Midwestern Higher Education Commission, commissioner and the Commission on Christian Higher Education for the Assemblies of God.

Earlier this year, Senator Champion was honored by the Springfield Business Journal when it named her as a 2006 recipient of the "Most Influential Women" award.

A mother and grandmother, Senator Champion is the widow of Rev. Richard Champion and the daughter of Bea Black of St. Louis.
