Current Bill Summary

SJR 21 - This proposed constitutional amendment, if approved by voters, would reduce the House of Representatives from 163 members to 101 members beginning with the 97th General Assembly. Currently, Representatives are elected every two years to serve two-year terms and one-half of the Senators are elected every two years to serve four-year terms. Beginning with the 97th General Assembly, all Representatives would be elected every four years and would be eligible to serve three four-year terms. Senators would be eligible to serve two six-year terms and one-third of the Senators would be up for election every two years. Beginning with the 97th General Assembly, no one shall serve more than 12 years total in one house nor more than 24 years total in both houses, disregarding any prior service.
