Current Bill Summary

SB 344 - This act creates the "Parent and Community School Information Act" to require the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to produce a simplified annual school report card for each public school attendance center in a school district and each charter school. Attendance centers and charter schools that only offer grades lower than third grade are exempt.

Grades will be based on an individual attendance center's performance on the Missouri School Improvement Program standards. Each school will be given a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F, based on the individual school's performance determined through the Missouri School Improvement Program standards with pluses or minuses possible. Numerical ranges that correspond to the letter grades are described in the act.

The Department must make an annual report to the Joint Committee on Education. The first annual report card must be distributed before December 1, 2014. The principal of each attendance center or charter school may include a statement not to exceed 250 words to provide context or background information on the school's letter grade.

This act is similar to HB 388 (2013) and a provision contained in SB 408 (2013).
