HB 1138 - Under current law, a child is required to complete 12 hours of credit at a vocational or higher education institution and shall not receive failing grades in half or more of his or her course load in any one semester in order to remain eligible for child support. This act specifies that in order to remain eligible, a child enrolled in at least 12 hours of credit at such institutions shall complete at least 12 hours of credit with passing grades each semester. If the child does not complete 12 hours of credit with passing grades, in the absence of a finding by the court of extenuating circumstances on behalf of the child causing the failure to complete the required credit hours with passing grades, the payment of child support shall be terminated and shall not be eligible for reinstatement. A child who is employed at least 15 hours per week during the semester shall complete at least 9 hours of credit with passing grades during the semester in order to remain eligible for child support.
