Community Events Ladies Free
Fishing Day Location: Maramec Spring Trout Park Women of all ages
will have a chance to trout fish for free at Maramec
Spring Park on Saturday, September 13th. Fishing will start at 7:30 a.m. and
continue until 7:15 p.m. There is no fishing license or daily trout tag
required for women during this free event. There will be prize fish stocked
into the fishing area. Not only is the event free, but also there is plenty of
fishing instruction offered as well. A special area of the spring branch will
be roped off for use by women anglers only. Informal instruction will be
offered including casting, basic trout fishing tactics and cleaning and cooking
your catch. Men are welcome to fish the rest of the park below the women’s
fishing area, with the purchase of a daily tag. Bring the whole family to enjoy
the day! This event is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Maramec Spring Park is located on Highway 8 about six miles

Offers Discover Nature Fishing Lessons Location: Montauk
State Park - Hatchery Building Fishing is a
great way for people to enjoy nature, especially children. The Missouri
Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a new program to help kids and
families gain angling skills and confidence. MDC's Discover Nature - Fishing
Program is free and teaches participants about fishing tackle, methods and
where to go. Lesson 1:
Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines
instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic
fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to properly and
safely cast a spincast fishing pole, parts of a
fishing pole, how to fasten basic fishing tackle and how to properly handle and
release a fish. Lesson is 1 to 3 PM. Lesson 3: Five Common Missouri Fish-Their
Anatomy, Habitat, and Life Cycle combines instruction with hands-on fishing to
teach young anglers and families basic biological concepts and functions
specific to largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid sunfish, channel catfish and
rainbow trout. Participants will learn the different components of fish anatomy
and their functions. Participants will learn about various types of fish
habitat and aquatic food webs. Lesson is 6 to 8 PM. Lesson 4: Fishing with
Lures and Fishing Regulations combines instruction with hands-on fishing to
teach young anglers and families how to properly select a fishing lure based on
desired fish species, weather and water conditions. Participants will learn how
to identify and understand fishing regulations. Lesson is 3 to 5 PM.
Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children.

Department Events at Forest Park The Department’s
Forest Park Office is located in the lower level of the Dennis and Judith
Jones Visitor and Education Center in Forest Park. Formerly known as the Lindell Railway Pavilion, this building was renovated by
Forest Park Forever and reopened in 2003. Department staff in
the office provide St. Louis-area residents with conservation programs,
workshops, materials, educational grants and instructional resources. Predator and

eats beetles? Who eats skunks? Who is a vegetarian in the forest? We’ll be in
the Forest today examining animal interactions, what they eat and how they

A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center Want to learn the
skills it takes to be an archery shooter. This program will cover safety, parts
of the bow and arrow, grip, stance, aiming and more. Then you will have some
live fire time. Ages 10 and up. Ages 10-15 must be

Valley Conservation Nature Center (All ages) Creepy, crawly, icky, pretty, crunchy, funny…yummy? Whether

tables, edible insects, pond water exploration, insect crafts, and much, much

Valley Conservation Nature Center (Ages birth-8)
Families, meet in the nature center lobby at 10:00 a.m. for a “nature”
adventure. Make sure to dress for the weather because we won’t be in the
building long. Everyone will hike with the naturalist to a special place in the
forest and enjoy a nature story under the canopy. Siblings are welcome. In case

Bottom Conservation Area Events To reach the Columbia
Bottom Conservation Area and Nature Center from I-270 north, take the
Riverview Drive exit (last Missouri exit); go north 2.8 miles. Riverview Drive
becomes Columbia Bottom Road at its intersection with Larimore Road. The
entrance is on the right-hand side. This area contains cropland, forest, wetlands, and old
fields. There is a visitor center and office along with hiking and biking
trails, interpretive sites and a boat ramp to the Missouri River. The unique
feature of this area is the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers,
which can be seen from a viewing deck. Bugs, Bugs and

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area (Ages 3 and up)
The forest provides a wealth of sights and sounds to engage our senses and
teach us about nature. Some of those sights and sounds come from bugs that
creep, crawl and sting. So, why do we have them? This morning, as we play games
and explore for bugs, we’ll discover why they are important to us, wildlife and
our environment. Dress for the weather. Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen

Summer is nearing its end, and the fields, prairies and slough are buzzing,
whirring and humming with the activity of insects, birds and other creatures.
Get out into nature and discover the source of some of these sounds as we walk
to the canoe/kayak access road and then to the viewing platform to watch the
full moon rise over the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Meet
at parking lot “L,” about 4 ½ miles from the front entrance. We will walk about

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area (Ages 6-12) Ever
wonder what Mother Nature has to do to get ready for school? Find the answers
through exploration and discovery. To get started, you’ll complete a craft
worthy of posting on the refrigerator door. Then, together, we’ll venture
through some our wild areas at Columbia Bottom. Be prepared. You never know
what Mother Nature has in store. Dress for warm weather and bring a water

complex provides a safe
environment for novice and experienced shooters. The complex includes
a 100-yard, baffled rifle/pistol range with 20 covered booths with target
placement at 7, 15, 25, 50, 75, and 100 yards. Additional facilities include
three trap fields, a shotgun patterning range, and a four-target static archery

Even new firearms from the store must be cleaned and properly lubricated before
being shot or going hunting. Keeping that rifle shooting, whether a family
heirloom, expensive sporting or competition gun, or a hard working basic
shooter, needs proper care and attention to keeping it working and prevent worn
or damaged parts. Come let us help you with proper techniques and overview some
of the multitude of products and claims out there to maintain your firearm.
