HCS/HB 1387 - This act establishes the Sickle Cell Standing Committee within the Department of Health and Senior Services and specifies committee membership. The committee shall assess the impact of sickle cell disease on the urban population, examine existing services and resources, and develop recommendations to provide educational services to schools on the traits of sickle cell disease and their effects. The committee shall submit a report to the Governor and the General Assembly no later than December 31, 2017, after which the committee shall continue to meet at least once annually to continue studying sickle cell disease in the state and develop further recommendations and reports.

This act also requires the Department of Health and Senior Services, beginning January 1, 2017, and subject to appropriations, to expand current newborn screening requirements to include severe combined immunodeficiency, also known as bubble boy disease.

Provisions of this act are identical to provisions in HB 1483 (2016) and SCS/HB 1682 (2016), and substantially similar to provisions in HB 867 (2015) and HCS/SCS/SB 230 (2015).
