Jefferson City — State Sen. Mike Cunningham, R-Rogersville, recently added a new audio and video download link to the Senate multimedia page, which is located on his Missouri Senate website. This feature allows radio and television stations to use these audio and video clips from the Senate for their coverage of legislative events. When downloaded, these audio and video files are broadcast quality. Downloaded files may be broadcast in whole or in part.

The Missouri Senate advanced a bill this week that will help safeguard the public from dangerous illegal immigrants coming into the state. Senate Bill 612 would make it a crime if someone without legal citizenship status enters Missouri and is accused of a felony or assault within the state. Bill sponsor, Sen. Cunningham says that because the federal government isn’t enforcing immigration laws, this measure serves as protection for Missourians from illegal immigrants who come to the state to cause harm.

The following is a video excerpt from Sen. Cunningham discussing how the federal government failed on the issue of immigration and why his legislation is needed to help fix the situation. The clip runs for 40 seconds.

Following is a transcript of the excerpt:

“The feds aren’t dealing with it. That’s quite evident in how they are handling it. They are not dealing with this situation, and the facts I gave down there on the floor – I think where they turn loose, what was it, 129 people that had committed murder after they turn them loose, some of them second, third, or fourth time. So the federal people are not dealing with it.

“If we stop someone and they don’t get detained, then they don’t take them into custody. I think this all kind of goes back to the individual in the shooting spree from Kansas going through Missouri and killing the Missourian, the feds should have, he was deported for a second time and he was still here in the United States. So I think this is what Missouri can do. If federal people can’t do it, we can.”

The bill now heads to the House for consideration. Lawmakers have until the close of business on May 13, 2016 to get the measure to the governor’s desk for his signature before it can become law.

Senator Cunningham will continue to add audio and video clips throughout the year. You can download or listen by going to Sen. Cunningham’s multimedia page: https://www.senate.mo.gov/category/sen-mike-cunningham/.
