JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Will Kraus, R-Lee’s Summit, is slated to host a bill enactment ceremony on Saturday to help raise awareness about the effective date of Senate Bill 1025 and to commemorate the occasion. Members of the press are invited to attend, and any lawmakers present will have the opportunity to speak on the bill if they choose.
Senate Bill 1025 restores instructional classes given at dance studios, gymnastics facilities and other fitness facilities to the same designation as educational classes — the classification they held before the Department of Revenue reinterpreted a sales tax law in 2008. The governor vetoed the measure in June. On Sept. 14, the Legislature convened for its annual veto session and quickly voted to overturn the governor’s veto.
Senate Bill 1025 officially took effect today, which means anyone providing instructional lessons is no longer required to collect sales tax on those classes. While sales tax is still required for tangible items, such as equipment or gear, the actual classes are tax free.
