JEFFERSON CITY — Senator Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, released the following statement today regarding the state auditor’s investigation of the St. Louis Office of the Recorder of Deeds:
“Elected officials have no more basic duty than upholding the public’s trust. Far too often we’ve seen this pledge abused. The mismanagement uncovered by the state auditor is just the latest in a long list of failings, from both parties across our state. I’m proud my request for an audit of the recorder of deeds office last year helped uncover these improper practices, and I will continue to fight to make governments across Missouri more efficient and effective.
“However, enough is enough. Failures like these erode our citizens’ trust in government and increase disconnect with those elected to serve them. Hopefully, this audit serves as a wakeup call for our Legislature and helps pave the way toward passing real, substantive ethics reform this session.”
Senator Nasheed has represented the City of St. Louis for nearly a decade in the state Legislature. Last July, upon media reports of impropriety in the recorder of deeds office, she requested a full audit of that office “without delay.”
