Senator Kurt Schaefer Receives Missouri Sheriffs’ Association Award
Jefferson City — State Sen. Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, has been named as the recipient of the 2016 Senator of the Year Award from the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association. The honor, which Sen. Schaefer was also awarded in 2012, recognizes one state senator a year for their outstanding commitments and legislative efforts toward supporting public safety and law enforcement. The award will be presented on Aug. 10 at the Missouri Sheriffs’ Association Summer Conference.
“It is a true honor to receive the Senator of the Year Award for the second time in my senatorial career,” Sen. Schaefer said. “I am pleased the Sheriffs’ Association recognizes the work that I have been able to accomplish with the help of my fellow lawmakers this past session.”
Sen. Schaefer is a member of the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, which works closely with the Sheriffs’ Association to advance legislation that improves community safety across the state. During the past session, Sen. Schaefer sponsored legislation that would improve Missouri public safety. Some of the measures included in the bills deal with adding acts of terrorism to the list of crimes punishable by the death sentence as well as defining the act of terrorism itself, requiring prison volunteers to be screened for terrorist activities, modifying sentencing and supervision for child sex criminals, doing away with Duty to Retreat requirements in public areas and expanding gun control rights for all lawful residents.
