Statement from Sen. Jamilah Nasheed Uber is Good for St. Louis
State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, responded to an announcement, on Monday, that the St. Louis Metropolitan Taxicab Commission’s lawsuit seeking to keep Uber from operating in St. Louis has been returned to St. Louis Circuit Court. The original lawsuit was filed on Oct. 5, 2015.
“It would be a sad day to see nearly 2,000 African-American jobs put on hold while the area’s taxi commission fights with all its might to protect taxicab companies owned and operated by its commissioners,” Sen. Nasheed said. Current law specific to St. Louis and St. Louis County mandates four of the taxi commission’s nine members be from the taxi industry.
Uber is creating jobs for thousands of people in St. Louis and helping to drive the economy forward. “My district needs the opportunities Uber is providing and we as a city should be supporting their efforts, not trying to shut them down to serve the interests of a few taxi companies,” stated Sen. Nasheed.
