HB 743 Modifies provisions relating to compensation for victims of crime

Current Bill Summary

- Prepared by Senate Research -

HB 743 - This act allows a claim for compensation paid for burial for the death of a crime victim to be made by a funeral home or a relative of the victim.

Currently, the Director of the Department of Revenue is required to deposit $250,000 annually to the state forensic laboratory account administered by the Department of Public Safety to defray the expenses of certain crime laboratories. This act changes the required deposit amount to be at least $250,000, but no more than $1 million.

The act modifies the amount of certain compensation judgments collected by the court, to be deposited into the Crime Victims' Compensation Fund, from persons found guilty of felony offenses. Currently, such judgments are $46 for Class C and D felonies. The act raises this amount for Class C felonies to $55, and adds Class E felonies to those offenses which require a $46 judgment.
