Last November, 63 percent of Missourians voted to support photo voter ID. As of June 1, Missouri’s new voter ID requirements are now in effect. If you are registered to vote, you can vote with a valid photo ID.
There are some things every Missourian should understand about the new law. First, and most importantly, every eligible registered voter can still request an absentee ballot or go to his or her polling place and vote on election day. Second, the Secretary of State’s office will begin a public information campaign about the new photo ID requirements and assist those individuals who do not have photo identification in order to vote.
Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft is hosting a series of regional information meetings across Missouri sharing an update on the new voter ID requirements and encouraging individuals to register to vote. At these meetings people without photo IDs will find information to help them obtain an ID. He will join local elected officials for an informational visit in several local towns in the coming days. I strongly encourage you attend one of these meetings, or reach out to the secretary’s office, or mine, if you have any questions about the new law.
