Eclipse Is Mostly a Bust in North Missouri, but Brings Tourism Boom to Missouri Communities
On Monday, Aug. 21, millions of Americans turned their eyes skyward to take in one of the natural world’s most spectacular events: a total solar eclipse. It was the first total solar eclipse to be visible from the contiguous United States since 1979. During the eclipse, the moon’s shadow raced across the country, from Oregon to South Carolina, at a speed of 1,600 mph, which is about three times faster than a commercial jetliner. Here in Missouri, the eclipse’s path of totality stretched from St. Joseph in the west to Ste. Genevieve in the east.
As much of the 12th Senate District found itself in or near the path of totality, I hope you were able to enjoy this singularly unique event. Although, I admit, many in Northwest Missouri were somewhat disappointed with viewing only a modest portion of the experience due to the cloudy weather. While the weather made the event very anti-climactic for those who long anticipated the event, it did bring many people from all around the state and the country to our local communities. Those who were fortunate enough to experience totality were treated to some amazing sights and sounds.
The eclipse attracted visitors from neighboring states and far away countries, generating a significant amount of revenue for the communities along the path of totality. Events like the eclipse highlight the importance of Missouri’s multi-billion dollar tourism industry and its industry professionals, who work tirelessly to ensure the Show-Me State leaves a positive, lasting impression on all those who visit.
