JEFFERSON CITY—State Senator Mike Parson, R-Bolivar, called for greater flexibility in assisting Missouri’s veterans today after a recent article revealed a nurse at a VA facility in Pennsylvania assisted with an emergency surgery while under the influence of alcohol. The latest revelation is the newest example of a long list of failures on the part of the VA to address the needs of veterans in the U.S.
“Over the last few years, we’ve heard time and again ways the VA has unsuccessfully provided adequate medical care to the men and women who’ve served our nation,” said Sen. Parson. “This latest news is reprehensible, and a clear sign we need to give our veterans more options in choosing where they receive their medical services.” Senator Parson believes giving veterans the option of utilizing local assisted-living homes and medical facilities would help address some of the problems within the VA system. “I believe we can improve access to care and the quality of life for Missouri’s veterans by giving them the flexibility to utilize the services of existing, local healthcare professionals,” said Sen. Parson. “This will help to meet the needs of the growing population of veterans, while also ensuring they can remain close to family and friends.” Senator Parson, a veteran himself, continued: “Using existing facilities will also be beneficial to taxpayers, who will save money by avoiding the construction costs associated with building multiple single-purpose facilities. This option allows veterans the choice to stay within their communities and choose where they receive their care.” For more information on Sen.
