Welcoming Visitors to the Capitol
Visiting the Missouri Capitol this week was the Saint Pius X Lancers volleyball team that won the 2016 Class 2 State Championship.
“It was an honor to host these talented young women at the Missouri Capitol,” said Senator Wieland. After photos and a tour of the Senate Chambers, Rep. Elaine Gannon introduced the team to the Missouri House of Representatives. The team then received a tour of the Capitol building and Senator Wieland provided lunch. Nick Kline, a St. Pius X alumni and an intern in Senator Wieland’s office, lead the group to the top of the Capitol Dome. Each player was presented with a senate resolution honoring her achievement.
Larry Giovanni was the high bidder on a lunch and capitol tour certificate provided by Senator Paul Wieland to the Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish auction in October of 2016. On Feb. 21, Mr. Giovanni and his wife Joanne visited the Missouri Capitol with three students from Our Lady Queen of Peace and Stephanie Schwantner. After arriving in Jefferson City, they enjoyed a private tour of the Missouri Senate Chambers and the other parts of the Capitol, and were treated to lunch in Senator Wieland’s office.
Suzie Welch brought Alexis Eggemeyer, Toni Fields, Madison Baisch, Heather Huber and Ryan Eggemeyer, who are sociology and social-work students from Jefferson College, to meet with Senator Wieland. These students were able to talk with Senator Wieland about state government and pending legislation.
Karen Ludwig and Juli Nelson of My Life Medical and Resource Center located in High Ridge visited on Wednesday. They were at the Capitol with the “Alliance for Life Day.”
Louise Meret-Hanke, Brittany Oehler, Susan Burris, Jim Espie, and Steve Miskovis from Jefferson County met with Sen. Wieland to update the Senator on the important work the Alzheimer Association preforms and to let him know that the state can be helpful in assisting families by managing this terrible disease.
Morgan Case and Brianna Strieker of Jefferson County, Rebecca Nehrt Flores, and Diana Baldwin met with Sen. Wieland while at the Capitol during the “Occupational Therapist” event.
Students from Seckman STUCO visited the Missouri Capitol and had the opportunity to meet with their legislators and learn about the Legislative process. “It is great to see these student leaders learning about their state government,” said Sen. Wieland. “These students have demonstrated their willingness to serve both their school and community.”
Senator Wieland filed two additional bills this week in the Missouri Senate.
Senate Bill 449 specifies that no employee or contractor of a city or county will be eligible to be a member of a port authority. “Growing and expanding Missouri’s ports is one of my highest priorities. Having had the opportunities to visit ports across our state and nation, Iam convinced that limiting the conflict of interest of policies insiders and bureaucrats will allow Port Authority Boards to make decisions and react to market conditions quicker. The fastest growing and most efficient ports are ones without these conflicts,” said Sen. Wieland. “I was impressed by the acumen of our county council after it recently voted down a nomination to our Jefferson County Port Authority
because it recognized the conflict by having a city administrator reappointed to the board.”
If SB 449 were to become law, it would remove the temptation for future county executives to attempt to appoint any career bureaucrats.
Senate Bill 450 regulates pre-need funeral contracts and adds important consumer protections to ensure that individuals that purchase these policies benefit from them when the time comes.
