Jefferson County’s students, advocates and families visiting the Capitol

14Jefferson County residents and Mizzou nursing students Alyssa Sitzes, Haley Martin and Taylor Patterson visited to talk about many of the challenges facing our health care system. These bright students will make wonderful nurses and the education and experience they are receiving will save lives. It is great to see the future of this industry already advocating for their patients.

15Another group advocating for their patients this week consisted of representatives for Pony Bird. Sara Sucharski and Linda Dallas advocated for some of the neediest individuals in our community. They sincerely do some amazing things with limited resources and it is always good to hear their perspectives on legislation and the state budget.

\17We also discussed many of the programs and clubs that our Jefferson County schools offer to help educate students about drug and alcohol abuse. Clubs such as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), leadership programs like NCADA and campaigns like Please Return On Monday (PROM) help educate students about the serious consequences of using drugs and alcohol.

16Multiple groups of students from across the district came to advocate about drug abuse prevention. The students were from Fox, Seckman and Windsor. These kids did their research and provided statistics about drug and alcohol use in their schools. They talked about the access kids have and potential solutions to the problem. These kids serve as role models in their classroom and actively advocate to keep their schools drug free.

We had a very large group of Home School families from Jefferson County visit the Capitol this week. These students got to tour that Capitol, visit with legislators and see government in action. The students and their families asked great questions and showed a lot of interest in what goes on in their Capitol building. It was truly a hands-on learning experience for these kids.
