Senator Jamilah Nasheed, the junior Senator from St. Louis, was elected by her peers today (11-10) to serve as Whip of the Senate Minority Caucus during the 99th General Assembly.
“It is an honor to serve my fellow caucus members,” said Sen. Nasheed. “Whips are a party’s ‘enforcers,’ who typically make sure caucus members are ready and present to cast votes on legislation. I am glad we could all come together and I look forward to working with my fellow colleagues in the Senate next year.”
Sen. Nasheed, a Democrat, was elected to serve in the Senate in 2012, and began to work on behalf of her constituents as a Senator in January 2013. In 2006, she was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, where she quickly earned a reputation for working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to accomplish her agenda. During her time in the Missouri House, Sen. Nasheed was the only minority party committee chairperson serving as Chairwoman of the House Urban Affairs Committee.
