Here in the Show-Me State, just as in communities throughout the country, the face of the family farm is aging. If we are to continue adequately feeding and fueling our nation and the world, we must do a better job attracting young people to the agriculture industry. I support any program that helps show Missouri’s youth why coming home to the farm is a great idea and a fulfilling way to live. Future Farmers of America is one of the pivotal programs doing just that.
Any chance I get, I try to meet with FFA students and encourage them to continue learning the skills that are necessary for building a career in agriculture. This week, my staff and I were very happy to welcome the 2016-2017 Missouri FFA State Officers for their annual visit to the Capitol.
During their two days in Jefferson City, students were able to meet with various lawmakers and the state commissioner of education. They were also introduced on the House and Senate floors and had the opportunity to observe proceedings in both chambers.
On Wednesday, I also had the pleasure of visiting with students from Moberly Career and Technical Education, Pike-Lincoln Technical Center and Hannibal Career and Technical Center. The students were at the Capitol for the Missouri Association for Career and Technical Education’s annual legislative day. I am always excited and proud to host some of the brightest young minds Missouri has to offer.
The 2017 legislative session runs from now until Friday, May 12. As always, please do not hesitate to contact my Senate office if you have any questions or concerns regarding state government. My Capitol office number is (573) 751-7985.
