Missouri Senate Reaches Halfway Mark in 2018 Legislative Session
The Missouri General Assembly’s 2018 legislative session, which began in January and ends in May, is now halfway done; so far the Missouri Senate, the legislature’s upper chamber, has had a fairly productive year. As a body, we’ve managed to pass a number of bills covering a wide range of topics. This progress is indicative of the Senate’s commitment to moving Missouri forward.
One notable advancement is the Senate’s vote to reauthorize the Missouri Works Program and the Missouri Works Training Program. The Senate passed Senate Bill 549 in February, and the House of Representatives, the legislature’s lower chamber, is currently reviewing the proposal. The bill would renew these two programs, which provide employee training for the state’s workforce, for an additional 11 years beyond their current expiration in 2019.
Another positive bill passed by the Senate is Senate Bill 882, which updates Missouri ABLE education savings accounts to provide more flexibility to account holders. The Senate approved the measure in March, and it, too, awaits further action in the House of Representatives.
The state legislature, currently on spring break, will reconvene for the final months of session on Monday, March 26. My colleagues and I look forward to continued discussion and lively debate over how best to govern the great state of Missouri.
