Senator Jay Wasson’s Column for the Week of September 10, 2018

Throughout the course of this week, the legislature met in two different types of legislative session. Each September, the Missouri General Assembly convenes to consider any legislation vetoed by the governor, and to discuss the possibility of overturning those vetoes. Since the General Assembly met this week for veto session, we also met for an extraordinary session that ran concurrently with veto session to reduce the costs of the session and efficiently use tax-payer dollars.

During the course of the extraordinary session, we considered two pieces of legislation, one of which establishes a statewide STEM career awareness program and creates new provisions of law related to computer science. The second bill we discussed establishes treatment court programs to reduce recidivism and encourage offenders to become productive citizens.

Both of these measures were approved and will become law before the end of the year.

This week also marked the last official business that will take place while I am a state senator. While my office will remain open until the end of my term later this year, my formal service as your voice in the Missouri Senate has come to an end.

I am proud of the work the Senate has accomplished over the last eight years, and I have strived to be open-minded and to keep the best interests of the people of Missouri as my highest priority. I hope I have served you well during my time in Jefferson City, and I am grateful for the opportunity to represent you in the Missouri General Assembly.
