New Year, New Opportunities
As 2017 draws to a close, the Missouri General Assembly is already gearing up for next year’s legislative session, which officially begins at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 3. State senators and representatives are busy compiling bills full of new ideas to make Missouri law more efficient and responsible.
When the legislature convenes, we will take a look at many of those proposals, discussing their merits both in committee and in our respective chambers. Some bills might pass, while others might not. Some will be changed through amendments and may look substantially different by the time they’re perfected and voted on, while others will see success with only minor revisions. All of this is part of our robust system of thoughtful governance called for in the Missouri Constitution — the process by which elected officials seek to improve the Show-Me State’s common well-being and move us all forward.
The New Year period is an exciting time for the General Assembly, but it’s also an opportunity. As we prepare for another regular session of our part-time legislature, we’re able to re-examine our goals and plot a course for the following year. That’s true for us as it is for every individual Missourian; New Year’s offers a time of reflection for personal matters as well as legislative ones.
Before we turn the page on 2017, take this opportunity to consider your priorities for the upcoming year. Whether you’d like to eat healthier, exercise more, spend more time with family or just complete a project that remains unfinished, now is the time to set resolutions for the future. Making concrete goals is a good way to encourage oneself to follow through. As the calendar advances, you can move yourself forward, as well.
