Supporting Seniors, Animals and Agriculture

On Thursday, March 1, the Missouri Senate passed Senate Bill 787, a proposal that would establish the Missouri Senior Farmers’ Market Nutritional Program. Senators from across the political spectrum came together in support of the bill; it passed without a single vote in opposition. The measure now heads to the Missouri House of Representatives for further consideration.

Senate Bill 787 would direct the Missouri Department of Agriculture to apply for a federal grant to assist low-income senior citizens in Missouri. If approved, the funding will be used to offer vouchers to eligible seniors redeemable for food at farmers’ markets, roadside stands and community-supported agriculture programs.

I think this program is a wonderful idea. These vouchers would support our elderly population by helping them afford healthy and nutritious foods, while simultaneously boosting the business of our state’s hardworking farmers. And because the program utilizes federal funds already in place, it would avoid adding any significant cost to Missouri’s budget. It’s a win for everyone involved.

Another bill passed by the Missouri Senate recently, Senate Bill 918, would prevent political subdivisions — counties, cities and other local governments below the state level — from banning the use of working animals. I believe this, too, is a good idea. Large cities shouldn’t be able to outlaw the simple services that visitors from other parts of the state peacefully enjoy.
