JEFFERSON CITY — On July 5, 2018, the governor signed two bills sponsored by Missouri Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, one that enhances protections for Missouri’s businesses and another that support arts in the classroom initiatives.
The governor signed the following bills: Senate Bill 608, a provision that will protect businesses across the state from frivolous lawsuits, and Senate Bill 773, provision that extends the allocation of the state’s nonresident athletes and entertainer’s tax 10 years, starting on Dec. 31, 2020.
“I was excited to see Senate Bill 608 become law because it places the necessary protections in place for Missouri businesses against unpredictable criminal acts committed by a third party,” Sen. Hoskins said. “When frivolous lawsuits are filed, they shift the costs and burdens of random or illegal acts committed by third parties onto Missouri businesses.”
The governor also signed Senate Bill 773, a proposal that extends the distribution of the nonresident athletes and entertainers tax through 2030. The arts and entertainment tax is allocated to five cultural partners, including the Missouri Arts Council Trust Fund, Humanities Council Trust Fund, State Library Networking Fund, Public Television Broadcasting Corporation Special Fund and the Historic Preservation Revolving Fund.
“For many youth, art is an avenue of expression helping them to channel their emotions and showcase their talents,” Sen. Hoskins said. “This tax is imposed on out-of-state entertainers who visit Missouri, making it possible for children across the state to be exposed to arts and cultural events they may otherwise not have access to.”
In fiscal year 2017, the state allocated $4.8 million dollars to the Missouri Arts Council, who were able to assist 552 arts-centered nonprofits and organizations with grants. Through these programs, the state was able to generate $47 million in revenue, attract 21.4 million tourists and create more than 31,000 jobs. The Missouri Arts Council provides and funds art activities all over the state.
