Senator Nasheed Presents Legislation to Move Confederate Monuments and Ban the Sale of Confederate Flags
Jefferson City – State Sen. Jamilah Nasheed, D-St. Louis, presented legislation to relocate Confederate monuments across the state to a state historical site.
Senate Bill 584 requires that Confederate monuments and plaques located across the state to be transferred to the Confederate Memorial State Historical Site in Higginsville, MO.
“Let’s stop believing the false narrative that the Civil War was fought over states’ rights,” said Sen. Nasheed. “These people were rebels against our country and they fought to keep a group of people shackled, enslaved and denied of basic human freedom. Let’s stop celebrating and admiring the people who would have oppressed a group of people for decades or even centuries to come. This is part of our history and that’s why it belongs in a historical facilities, not in places of honor across the state.”
The legislation also bans the state, departments and agencies from selling or displaying the Battle Flag of the Confederacy unless it appears in a book, museum or park for educational or historical purposes.
“The Confederate Flag is a symbol of oppression,’” said Sen. Nasheed. “The state shouldn’t display it unless it’s for educational purposes out of respect for those who fought and died to keep this country together.”
Senate Bill 584 was heard in the Missouri Senate’s General Laws Committee.
