Combatting Opioid Addiction in Missouri
Click the video above for a message on the importance of Senate Bill 826
Missouri is one of the hardest hit states when it comes to opioid addiction. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, opioid-related overdose deaths have been climbing over the past 15 years, reaching a high of 908 deaths in 2016 alone. Because of this need, I am proud to support a piece of legislation that can help curb the use of opioids and prevent opioid addiction in Missouri. Senate Bill 826 limits the initial prescription of opioids to no more than a seven-day supply for most patients. In addition, SB 826 expands prescription drug disposal opportunities while also educating individuals on the benefits of safely disposing unused medications. While there are many other steps we need to take to fight opioid addiction in Missouri, this legislation is a positive step in the right direction and I am glad to lend my support to its passage out of the Missouri Senate.
