Now that each Missouri senator knows committee assignments, numerous legislative committees began meeting this week to discuss and debate the merits of proposed legislation. Each bill and legislative proposal must receive approval from a legislative committee before it can move to the full Missouri Senate for further consideration. I will present my first bill of the year next week, when the Missouri Senate Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and the Environment Committee hears Senate Bill 55. My proposal would authorize the Missouri Public Service Commission, during a general rate proceeding for a water corporation or sewer corporation, to set a separate, lower fixed charge or customer charge for low-income customers.
The start of committee hearings also means the Missouri Senate Gubernatorial Appointments Committee usually has a full slate of great Missourians who want to work to make our state a better place for all Missourians. Israel Baeza of Sedalia will serve as the Pettis County Eastern District Commissioner. I have known Israel for some time, really like his enthusiasm and want to thank him for offering to serve his state. I know he will do a great job.
