Sen. Crawford’s Capitol Report, for the Week of Feb. 25

We have wrapped up the first two months of the 2019 legislative session, which means we only have two and half months left until session concludes. During the past week, I was able to have one of my bills heard in committee.

Senate Bill 325 would update provisions relating to state parks concession contracts and operation of facilities. This proposal was heard in the Missouri Senate Agriculture, Food Production and Outdoor Resources Committee.

Our first all-night floor debate of the session was Tuesday and centered around Senate Bill 7, which is a tort reform measure that has been in the works for a long time and needed a great deal of attention. We were able to give this legislation first-round approval early on Wednesday morning. The measure is referred to as joinder and venue. Simply put, the goal is to keep people from all over the country from coming to our state and seeking judges who would be sympathetic to frivolous lawsuits, which clog our courts and cost us millions of dollars.

Despite the fact this was a long night, it was quite interesting to watch. We got the chance to hear from several of the new senators in the Missouri Senate. It was also my first opportunity to work closely with many of my colleagues in my role as majority caucus whip. My job, in this capacity, is to make sure caucus members are present to cast votes. This can be a trick at 4 in the morning, but we got the job done.

I am honored to serve as your senator in the Missouri Senate. If, at any time, you have questions, concerns or ideas regarding state government, please feel free to contact me at (573) 751-8793 or Sandy.Crawford@senate.mo.gov.
