We are nearing the midway point of the 2019 legislative session. During this past week, I was able to present three more important pieces of legislation in committee.
On Wednesday morning, Senate Bill 277 was heard in the Missouri Senate Seniors, Families and Children Committee. The measure would reform state law relating to the enforcement of child support agreements.
The Missouri Senate Local Government and Elections Committee, which I chair, heard Senate Bill 221 on Wednesday. This legislation seeks to modify various provisions relating to elections.
In addition, the Missouri Senate Small Business and Industry Committee discussed Senate Bill 114 on Thursday. This bill would adjust the fees charged by Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) contractor license offices.
Also this week, one of my bills was passed by the Senate and is now on its way to the Missouri House of Representatives. Senate Bill 167 would modify provisions relating to bonding requirements on public works.
I would also like to let you know DOR will start offering REAL ID-compliant driver licenses and non-driver identification cards on March 25, 2019.
These are five things to keep in mind about REAL ID:
- There is no immediate need to apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver license or ID card because the current Missouri-issued license and ID card will afford the same access as a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card until Oct. 1, 2020;
- Applying for a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card is a choice under Missouri law;
- Not every person will necessarily need a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card;
- License offices will be unable to provide driver license services on Saturday, March 23, 2019, due to necessary system updates regarding REAL ID processing capabilities. Motor vehicle titling and registration services may still be provided at those license offices scheduled to be open; and
- Transaction and processing fees for a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card, new or renewal, will be the same as they are currently. Detailed fee information can be found on DOR’s website. Customers can apply for an early duplicate license or ID card outside of their regular renewal period, which is six months prior to the expiration of their license or ID card.
